Did YOU Know These Four Facts?!

Here at Premier Flooring, there is nothing we don’t know about carpets! The humble floor covering actually has an absorbing history and there is lots to learn about the thing that is right beneath your feet but often goes unnoticed due to its everyday nature. We have plucked out four fun facts for your reading pleasure; enter, if you will, into the richly-woven history of the carpet.

  • Speaking of plucking, the word ‘carpet’ itself derives from a Latin word - carpere - which has the meaning ‘to pluck’. At this time in history, carpets were fabricated from lengths of material that had been plucked (or unravelled) and, though they were not the most magisterial, they served their purpose admirably. You will probably be familiar with the phrase ‘carpe diem’ which means ‘seize the day’ - the same root word carpere is used here.

  • The late 19th and early 20th century saw the carpet become as much a decorative item as a functional one. This meant that people took more pride in their carpets and the vacuum cleaner came into being - in their first incarnations, the machines were heavy, huge and cumbersome, taking up to three people to operate. As they were coal-powered, these early vacuum cleaners often brought more dirt in with them than was already there in the first place!

  • At more than 2,000 years old according to carbon-dating, the Pazyryk Carpet discovered in an ancient Siberian tomb is the oldest in the world that survives to this day. Of course, it is now somewhat threadbare but is a reminder of just how long we have been carpeting our floors - the method looks set to be around for a long time to come.

  • Carpet Cleaning Advice from 1924 - ‘to bring all of the dirt to the surface, a process that will enable the job of sweeping to be carried out with much-improved efficiency, scatter dry tea-leaves liberally over the carpet surface’. We certainly do not recommend carrying out this little ‘tip’ almost a century later - our beautiful carpets do NOT appreciate such treatment!
